University of Miami – Palmetum Expansion

Since 2025, the University of Miami allows SFPS to hold its Spring sale in the parking lot of Gifford Arboretum. In return, SFPS have expanded the palm collection at UM in 2025 and 2026. See link on 2025 UM Planting Day.

Kiem Foundation

The SFPS has funded and coordinated the relocation and rescue of threatened specimens to the property, including large Coccothrinax palms saved from private developments in Miami Beach. See link.

Morningside Park Palmetum

Morningside Park has featured this Palmetum since it opened in 1953. While a dozen or so of the original 1953 plantings remain, many palms were lost to attrition over time. The South Florida Palm Society (SFPS), in agreement with the City of Miami, adopted the Palmetum and aspires to restore it to glory. See link.

Virginia Key

Historic Virginia Key Beach is not just a beautiful subtropical island and significant flyway for many bird species; it also has played a major role in the social history of Miami-Dade County since 1945.

The Board of Directors of the South Florida Palm Society voted to donate $3,320 to TREEmendous Miami for the acquisition and planting of the Sabal palms, and the results are very gratifying. See link
